Are you a superhero in need of a new cape or utility belt?
If so, head to Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co. for all your crime-fighting needs. Located in Park Slope, the nifty shop sells everything from galactic light blasters to folding grappling hooks.
It may very well be the only store of its kind, and like any good superhero, it also has a secret identity. Behind its wacky but real storefront lies 826NYC, a nonprofit tutoring center and writing program that encourages children to express themselves creatively through writing. It provides free workshops and tutoring services to kids between the ages of six and 18.
Launched by writer Dave Eggers and educator Nínive Clements Calegari, the organization is currently comprised of eight chapters spread across the U.S. The wacky storefront idea came about as a way to bypass zoning restrictions, which flagged the first and original tutoring center, 826 Valencia, for retail.
Located in San Francisco’s Mission District, 826 Valencia consists of a writing lab, two satellite classrooms and a pirate supply storefront.
