FIGMENT came from modest beginnings. What originally began as a free one-day art event eventually transformed into a “forum for creation.” Since its launch in July 2007, FIGMENT has quickly grown in size and popularity; it now features interactive work from emerging artists across all sorts of disciplines.
Unlike museums, which often shield art behind glass cases, FIGMENT NYC encourages visitors to interact with the pieces. By doing so, collaboration is fostered between the artist, the viewer and the environment.
“Art is not just something that you stand still and quietly look at — it is something you participate in. You touch it, smell it, write on it, talk to it, dance with it, play with it, learn from it,” states the FIGMENT website
FIGMENT NYC, which takes place on Governors Island every summer, was born out of a desire to share art with the public. It does not accept corporate sponsorships to fuel its programs. Rather, FIGMENT is funded entirely by grants and donations, and it relies heavily on the help of volunteers to keep it free.
This year, FIGMENT NYC will take place from June 3-5. However, its summer-long projects, including a mini golf course, an architectural pavilion and interactive sculptures, will be open to the public from June to September.
