One of my favorite things to do is to wander aimlessly. When you explore without a direct agenda, you come across cool things like this time capsule:
Actually, there’s two buried down there. I’ve been in this area of Flushing Meadows Corona Park numerous times. Yet, I never took notice of these capsules because of the ruins of the New York State Pavilion that exists behind them.
You might recognize them from Men In Black or Iron Man 2, but this area was also the site of the "universal and international" exposition known as the 1964 - 65 World’s Fair.
The two time capsules (Time Capsule I and Time Capsule II) were created for the 1939 and 1964 New York World’s Fair. They were placed 50 feet below the ground by the Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company, and are located a short distance away from the pavilion. According to my research (which I conducted shortly following my discovery), they are set to open in 6939 - 5000 years after “Time Capsule I” was first sealed.
Who knows how far humankind will advance by then? After all, roughly 5000 years ago, writing was just being created…
Since we won’t be alive to witness the excavation of these time capsules, I made sure to research what’s currently inside of them. In capsule I, you can find small, everyday objects, such as a fountain pen, a Life magazine, camel cigarettes, and different types of materials (fabrics, seeds, metals, plastics), among many other things (see Wikipedia for the whole list). Capsule II also includes articles that were in common use back then, as well images of a guest book that was signed by people who visited the Westinghouse exhibit during the World’s Fair.
