Preston Castle, also known as The Preston School of Industry, is a former reform school located in Ione, California.
Known for a few famous wards and for stories of paranormal presences, the castle is a fascinating spot that, although in decay, still runs tours and has special days twice a year reserved for photographers. The main building — the Castle — is an important example of Romanesque Revival Architecture and is a California Historical Landmark.
The school was founded in June 1984 when a few wards were transferred from San Quentin State Prison. They used to keep minors under the guardianship of the state in the prison, even if they hadn’t committed a crime. A few of the famous former wards include Neal Cassady, Pancho Gonzales, Eddie Anderson and Rory Calhoun, among others.
The reform school was officially closed in 2011. The building is said to be haunted by former wards. One of the guards, who is a paranormal investigator, said that he has heard ghosts before. He explained that one of the most memorable encounters was a child’s voice he heard in the former dormitory.
It is a creepy, beautiful and intriguing location. For more information, visit http://www.prestoncastle.com.
