At 6 feet 9 inches tall and weighing 196 pounds, Brandon Ingram looks like the archetypal basketball player. He’s slender, with tattoos running up the length of his arms and long limbs that extend well past his torso.
As the potential No.1 pick in the 2016 NBA draft, the last place you’d expect to find him is in Washington Square Park, drawing portraits of pedestrians. Still, that’s exactly what he was doing June 1.
With a black pencil in his hand, he casually made conversation with his subjects as he sat hunched over his easel.
Although Ingram used to dabble in art when he was younger, his passion for the craft only reemerged in the last few months, according to a CBS article. Both his brother and father had no idea that he had picked up the hobby.
Yet, for the young basketball star, drawing has been a way for him to relax, especially after a pressure-filled freshman season at Duke University.
Ingram frequently sketches other basketball players and creates still-life images of people. In Washington Square Park, he combined both interests by sketching pedestrians onto pre-made line drawings of basketball players in action. A handwritten sign — “Portraits by Brandon” — invited anyone to sit down as his subject.
