Bushwick has somehow found a way to make recycling fun. Scattered around Jefferson and Dekalb streets in Brooklyn, bright, honeycomb-like racks are hanging on street posts. Although they look like sculptures, the racks, called Urban Hubs, actually act as recycling bins for bottles and cans.
Each 3D-printed rack features a modular design, which allows users to utilize them in connected sets or as single bins. The project, created by New York startup TCR3D, was launched as a way to positively impact neighborhood recycling rates.
Although the hubs mainly serve an ecological purpose, they also help the community of canners in Brooklyn by making discarded bottle and cans more readily accessible. In order to propel this mission, Urban Hubs has partnered with “Sure We Can,” a recycling center and sustainability hub.
In addition, blueprints of the design are available online, allowing “makers” to create their own Urban Hubs and install them around the neighborhood.
