Chef Judy Lai is the mastermind behind Silk Cakes.
She never dreamed she would have a successful career as a pastry chef. Despite growing up in a culinary-inspired household — her father was a chef and her grandmother was a baker — Judy considered baking to be more of a hobby rather than a viable career path.
Even so, her passion for the craft eventually led her to dedicate her nights to studying pastry; she then went on to pursue a pastry arts degree from the French Culinary Institute before launching Silk Cakes in 2006.

At the time, Judy was simultaneously working full-time as a pastry chef. It wasn’t until 2013 that she decided to fully dedicate herself to her company.
Her hard work and commitment to baking easily translated into her desserts. Soon enough, Judy opened her second store in Forest Hills; it joins her flagship store, located in the Lower East Side.
Silk Cakes specializes in customized cakes, known for their “Asian inspired designs” and flavors.

Some of the most popular flavor combinations include chocolate cake with a green tea buttercream and chocolate truffle, as well as a Sriracha chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream, chocolate truffle and lime zest.
Just in time for the warmer weather, Silk Cakes also recently announced its new seasonal product: ice cream cupcakes.

They are now available until the end of the summer, so swap the usual buttercream frosting for a scoop (or two) of ice cream instead.
