I was delighted to find a tiny black door stuck on an ordinary brick wall on Wyckoff Avenue. It instantly reminded me of playwright Cynthia von Buhler and the 150 QR-tagged doors installed in her honor around New York City.
I came across my first one in Williamsburg just a few months ago. I assumed the mysterious black door was just another part of her series.
From what I could tell, it was a relatively new installation. It wasn't there last week, but like all of von Buhler’s doors, this one had a QR code, which I scanned using my phone.
To my surprise, it led me to the Facebook page of something completely different — the Door Project. It was launched in January 2013 as a way to “help everyone slow down, notice and enjoy the small things in life.”
The artist, who remains nameless, came up with the idea after realizing life felt a little bit too rushed.
“…when you are rushing, you miss those small details,” the project page states.
In spreading the mission, the artist places homemade doors in different states around the U.S. The tiny creations have already been installed in 19 states as of January 2015.
