While we do have to give some recognition to Times Square, the Empire State Building and Central Park, The Big Apple is more than just the “To Visit” section of a guidebook. We’ve got $1 pizza, which should warrant a standing ovation. The city is known for a few other pizza and non-pizza related things.
1. The Skyline
We’d hate to brag, but New York City’s skyline is so bomb that there’s an EarthCam dedicated to it. With 6,154 completed skyrises — 112 of which are taller than 600 feet (shoutout to One World Trade Center) — New York City’s architecturally-studded horizon is truly one-of-a-kind.
2. The Food Scene
With good reason, critics often label New York as “the best restaurant city in the world.” After all, it’s home to wonderfully whimsical creations like the Cronut and the Rainbow Bagel. And just so we’re clear, it’s not a strange to pay $100 for a golden donut. And no, we’re not sharing.
3. The Nightlife
You can walk into a bar at 3 a.m. to begin your night. Who knows, maybe you’re used to premature last calls, but in “the city that never sleeps,” you can drink until the wee hours of the morning and feel right at home. Welcome to the A.M. crew.
4. The Transportation System
If the smell of urine and flaking wall paint didn’t drop enough hints, New York City’s subway system is the world’s oldest public transit system, boasting 24 hours of operation every day of the year.
5. The Grid System
Thanks to the Commissioners’ Plan of 1811, the streets of Manhattan were built around a rectangular grid plan, making the city fabulously easy to navigate.
