Secretly Awesome: 3 Hidden Places To Enjoy Nature In AtlantaPhoto: Grand Hyatt

The development of the Beltline has been a boon for Atlantans who love nature, but there's still no denying that the ATL is still more urban than jungle. But if you're looking for a little oasis of green among the skyscrapers and suburban homes, the city has a surprising secret stash of cool parks and trails to check out. Here are three of our favorite hidden gems.

The Grand Hyatt's Japanese Zen Garden
Buckhead

The bustling intersection of Peachtree and Piedmont in Buckhead is a tough place to find peace, but look within the grounds of the Grand Hyatt hotel, and you'll find this lovely Japanese garden, complete with a teahouse, rock arrangements, and a 32-foot waterfall. The garden is officially restricted to hotel guests and customers, but the purchase of a cocktail at the Onyx Lounge or lunch at Cassis Restaurant should be sufficient to gain admission.

Doll's Head Trail

Housed in Constitution Lakes Park, this unusual trail, created by local artist Joel Slaton, encourages visitors to create their own art out of objects found within the park. In keeping with the moniker, doll heads are a primary theme, but you'll also find quirky pieces made from old bricks, truck parts, tiles, and other trash-turned-to-treasure to point your way through two miles of wetlands and wildlife. If you have an artistic bent, you can even add to the collection—but everything you place on the trail must come from within the park.

You don't have to be a university affiliate to visit the rooftop garden at Georgia Tech's LEED Platinum-certified Clough Commons, which spans a massive 18,000 feet. Grab a coffee from the Starbucks on the ground floor and head up to level five, where you'll find plenty of nooks for reading and relaxing, killer views of the skyline, and a few fun eco-friendly touches, like solar panels and solar water collectors.
