Hoodline crunched the numbers to find the top 50 donut shops around the country, using Yelp data collected in early May and our own special sauce to produce a data-driven breakdown of where donuts reign supreme in the US—and how New Orleans stacks up.

As it turns out, New Orleans is definitely pulling its weight, boasting the highest-rated donut emporium in the nation. That's right: Café Du Monde landed on our list at #1.

While it has a lower, 4- star average rating, it has accumulated a massive number of reviews at 9,198 — weighting it more favorably than most other shops in the top tier that average 1,327 reviews.

What makes Café Du Monde special? Its long-running operation (the original café opened in 1862) and traditional beignets probably contribute to its popularity. But there appears to be another factor, based on our analysis: its 24-7 operation. Only 5 percent of the 17,000 donut shops on Yelp in the US are open all the time, but 28 percent of the top 50 are, including five of the top ten donut places nationally.

Next on the list at #19, you'll find District Donuts Sliders Brew, with a 4.5- star average with 1067 reviews. It's the only eatery in our top 50 that's jointly categorized as a donut and burger shop, making it a desirable destination for locals and tourists alike.
