With summer right around the corner, ice cream shops around the country are about to get a lot busier. But when it comes to getting the best ice cream around, do you know where to go?
To get the scoop, Hoodline crunched the numbers to find the top 50 ice cream shops around the country, using Yelp data from May and our own signature recipe to produce a data-driven breakdown of where America’s most iconic ice cream establishments call home—and how Los Angeles ranks.

As it turns out, Angelenos are well represented, with a whopping 13 of the nation’s best ice cream operations. The highest-ranking spot, at #3, is Milk, a Beverly Boulevard staple that came in with a lower 4.0- star average, but with a large number of reviews at 5,295—weighting it more favorably than most other ice cream boutiques in the country.
What makes Milk special? Its macaron ice cream sandwiches, ice cream bars, drumsticks, sundaes and shakes contribute to its popularity, not to mention its lengthy, ever changing list of flavors. However, there seems to be another factor: compared to other top 10 ice creameries in the country, Milk is open the latest, staying open until 11pm on most nights and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Its close proximity to the Beverly Center’s many shops and restaurants also helps to attract the crowds.
Next on the list at #8, you'll find Scoops, which landed on our list with an impressive 4.5- star average with 2,183 reviews. It serves up daily flavors such as pandan and oreo, blackberry balsamic jasmine, malt pretzel, matcha almond and maple brûlée, attracting locals and visitors alike.
Los Angeles’ final ice creamery to crack the top 10 is Saffron & Rose Ice Cream, which is #10 with a 4.5- star average rating with 1,527 reviews. A beloved go-to for those who crave floral flavors and extra creamy sweet treats, it’s a well known establishment in Little Tehran that offers hard to find flavors like orange blossom, pomegranate and cucumber.
