All good things must come to an end—as well as some not-so-good ones. Washington Square Park

The tranquility of the park and the majesty of various memorials, nearby Independence Hall and monuments of the American Revolution can all help someone on the bad end of a hard conversation get some bigger-picture perspective. The area is also busy, but not so much with locals, so you probably won't be running into mutual acquaintances. And, when all the words have been said, you can depart inspired by the country's freedom-loving forebears.... then maybe head towards the many bars, restaurants or transit stops in the area.

The fancy restaurant version of a British pub has a bar and small table seating, dark wood, brass, and leather interior. Even a fireplace. It'll feel comfortable, but classy. The cocktails, beer and wine selections, and Great Britain-inspired menu are the main attractions, and the overall vibe is more of a restaurant—great for keeping a tough conversation on the rails. Nearby Rittenhouse Square offers a popular open-air walk if needed. Public transit options are only slightly further.
Philadelphia Museum Of Art
Fairmount/Art Museum District
A public venue intended for quiet contemplation, the museum provides a grand background of Graeco-Roman architecture and design for what you have to tell your soon-to-be less significant other. Sit on the seemingly endless steps leading up to the museum and gaze at the fountain, the statuary, and the main stretch of the city skyline, to help them appreciate the greatness and beauty of the wider world. And the Rocky statue.
Dim Sum House
University City
Mainly known for the food, this higher-end dim sum establishment has a classy bar tucked off to the side—that stays less crowded for much of the day. Food is served late, but the bar gets more popular as the 2am closing time nears (in case you're trying to have a quieter sort of difficult conversation). A pool table is even available if you and your soon-to-be ex are looking for a distraction.
James G. Kaskey Memorial Park
University City
Five acres of vibrant nature create a hidden getaway in the middle of the main Penn campus. Designed more than 100 years ago as a botanical garden, it's still used for university research today. But the park today has been through a series of renovations that make for a relaxing walk through thousands of plants from around the world, with a pond in the middle (you may hear the place referred to as the Biopond on campus).
