A new gastropub and Indian spot has made its debut in the neighborhood. Located at 13 East 1st St. (between 2nd Ave. & Extra Pl.) in East Village, the new arrival is called Baar Baar.
Described as a "first-of-its-kind Indian gastrobar," Baar Baar is housed in the former L'Apicio space, which has received a colorful makeover. It combines cocktails inspired by Indian flavors with modern interpretations of regional Indian cuisine from chef Sujan Sarkar, who's previously cooked in top Indian restaurants across the globe.
Small plates include everything from Kashmiri lamb ribs with apricot and chili to veal sweetbreads koliwada to tandoori mushrooms with truffle. Thali, or sharing platters, are available for meat-eaters (with duck patties, lamb kabobs, and prawn sausages), or vegetarians (with options like pulled jackfruit and ricotta-stuffed peppers). Diners can accompany their meal with creative breads like green pea and goat cheese kulcha.
The new gastropub has gotten an enthusiastic response thus far, with a five-star rating out of five reviews on Yelp.
Mike C., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on December 1st, said: "The new spot replacing L'Apicio just opened, and it continues the recent trend of great new Indian restaurants in NYC. There's a large menu consisting of some staples, as well as some really great unique items."
Yelper Ashley G. added: “Ambiance is great! Staff was amazing. Food and drinks and music was all in sync. Their decor is beautiful, and the best part of their space.”
And Push U. said: "Three of us had dinner last night. We ordered a bunch of small dishes and had a number of drinks. Highlights include the potato tikka, lamb ribs, several kulfis, Calcutta Cup (drink), and the beetroot."
Head on over to check it out: Baar Baar is open Monday–Wednesday from 4pm–midnight, and Thursday–Saturday from 4pm–2am. (It's closed on Sunday.)
