Topping the list is Roasting Plant Detroit, the New York-based chain that brews every cup to order from single-origin beans or a custom blend. Located at 660 Woodward Ave. downtown, it's the highest rated coffee roastery in Detroit, boasting 4.5 stars out of 211 reviews on Yelp.

The high-tech operation uses its patented Javabot system that stores green beans in clear tubes, then "through a burst of air, the beans are propelled through the tubes then roasted in small batches, with automated grinding and brewing done on a per-order basis," explains Daily Coffee News.

2. Great Lakes Coffee Roasting Company

Next up is Midtown's Great Lakes Coffee Roasting Company, situated at 3965 Woodward Ave. With four stars out of 333 reviews on Yelp, the bar and micro-roaster has proved to be a local favorite. The roastery says it closely monitors each batch and offers a "constantly changing palette" of single-origin brews, blends and roast levels.

Housed in a trendy space with exposed brick walls and a wood ceiling and floor, Great Lakes Coffee Roasting features a full wine list, pour-over coffee, tea and specialty espresso like the lavender latte. Sandwiches, small plates and fresh-baked goods are also available.

The small local chain opened in Detroit in 2015, and now has outposts in Rochester and Royal Oak.

Current coffee options come from farms in El Salvador, Kenya and Rwanda. Enjoy your coffee with a slice of one of more than a dozen freshly baked cheesecakes, including mainstays like the banana Nutella and tiramisu or seasonal offerings like caramel apple and key lime. Pastries and a full collection of vegan treats are also available.
