Black Coffee
4885 MacArthur Blvd. NW, Palisades

The Black Coffee cafe serves a wide assortment of caffeinated beverages, sweet treats, savory breakfasts and hearty lunches.
It's the latest venture of Jeff and Barbara Black, the team behind Black Restaurant Group, with the cafe on the same block as the couple's seafood market and restaurant BlackSalt.
For weekend brunch, try Black Coffee's buttermilk waffles with fruit, freshly made quiche or chilaquiles (fried egg, pico de gallo, salsa verde and cheese over crispy tortilla). On the daily menu, look for house-made granola with Greek yogurt and spiced fruit compote, vegetable latke and a pork belly and fried egg sandwich. Wash it down with juice, a mimosa or Bellini cocktail, or hot espresso, coffee or tea.
With a 4.5-star Yelp rating out of four reviews, Black Coffee has been getting positive attention.
Vivian R., who reviewed Black Coffee on April 21, wrote, "Staff members were very pleasant and quick to prepare our vanilla lattes. The menu is better than most coffee shops: a small daily selection of breakfast items, sandwiches and salads, as well as more substantial breakfast choices on the weekend menu."
Yelper David S. wrote, "Pretty much perfect. Coffee is professionally done, food is surprisingly refined but suitably priced, decor is nice balance between casual and upscale, location is great with easy parking, hours are extensive, and the owners are there a lot to make sure everything is right."
Black Coffee is open from 7 a.m.–8 p.m. on Tuesday-Thursday, 7 a.m.–9 p.m. on Friday, 8 a.m.–9 p.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m.–8 p.m. on Sunday. (It's closed on Monday.)
1310 Kitchen & Bar
1310 Wisconsin Ave. NW (near North Street NW), Georgetown

Over in Georgetown, 1310 Kitchen & Bar is helmed by chef Jenn Crovato, a D.C. native who prides herself on using high-quality, local ingredients.
"My formula for cooking has always been to emphasize excellent ingredients paired with simple cooking preparations," Crovato explains on the restaurant's website. "Nothing pretentious or fancy, just straightforward good food."
For brunch, expect an array of mouthwatering options, from banana-stuffed challah French toast to huevos rancheros and avocado toast topped with a poached egg. On the midday menu, look for a variety of small plates and lunch items, such as tuna tartare, fried artichoke hearts served with a lemon-garlic aioli and grilled flat-iron steak with chimichurri, red onion and arugula.
Yelp users are generally positive about 1310 Kitchen & Bar, which currently holds four stars out of eight reviews on the site.
Yelper Brent B., who reviewed the new eatery on April 9, wrote, "1310 Kitchen and Bar is a nice restaurant with a pleasant interior and excellent food. While I'd still label this place up-and-coming as they figure things out like servers and matching cups, this venue seems like it will only continue to improve and become part of the Georgetown food community as time goes by."
And Nayan P. said, "Amazing, simple, healthy food. Great location in the heart of Georgetown. Breakfast was the best, and I loved the beer selection."
1310 Kitchen & Bar is open from 6:30 a.m.–2 p.m. on Monday, 6:30 a.m.–2 p.m. and 4 p.m.–9 p.m. on Tuesday-Friday, 7 a.m.–9 p.m. on Saturday and 7 a.m.–2 p.m. on Sunday.
Maison Kayser
650 Massachusetts Ave. NW (at Seventh Street NW), Downtown

Parisian import and international chain Maison Kayser continues its expansion with its second bakery and cafe in the district.
The bakery boasts roughly 300 freshly made products, ranging from breads and pastries to classic French bistro dishes and grab-and-go sandwiches. The seasonal menu features a wide array of breakfast and brunch offerings, including cinnamon and maple syrup French toast with crème fraîche, chia seed pudding, smoked salmon with eggs and capers, and a croque-madame with Gruyere cheese and smoked ham.
For breads, expect to see traditional French mainstays like baguettes and tourte de meule (millstone pie) along with whole wheat and rye. A selection of croissants with almond, chocolate or custard are also available.
Maison Kayser's current rating of 3.5 stars out of 19 reviews on Yelp indicates the newcomer is finding its way, but it's still early days.
Yelper David R., who was one of the first users to visit Maison Kayser on April 18, wrote, "I know there is always room for improvement, but I enjoyed Maison Kayser sufficiently to give them five stars. I liked the fact you could sit down and order breakfast, or get pastries to go."
Stuart M. noted, "Our waiter had us sampling breads and pastries from the bakery. I regret not having room for any of the enticing baked deserts. Coffee and latte drinks were good, and refills kept coming. We have been to Paris and loved eating there. This was similar and far easier."
Maison Kayser is open from 7 a.m.–10 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m.–8 p.m. on weekends.
