1. El Asador

Topping the list is steakhouse and Mexican spot El Asador, which offers seafood and more. Located at 1312 Springwells St., it's the highest rated business in the neighborhood, boasting four stars out of 255 reviews on Yelp.
Chef Luis Garza's menu focuses on fresh food made from scratch, like tacos de chorizo with a soft corn tortilla filled with spicy Mexican sausage, onions, potatoes and queso fresco, and mole gallina simmered in a complex housemade sauce, per its website.
2. Sheila's Bakery

Next up is Sheila's Bakery, situated at 2142 Springwells St. With five stars out of 26 reviews on Yelp, the shop to score cakes, cookies, pastries and other sweet treats has proved to be a local favorite.
Take it from Nick L., who was one of many Yelp reviewers to rave about the bakery's tres leches cake: "Shelia's has the best tres leches cake in all of Detroit! They're always beautifully decorated, especially the round ones. Great for birthdays, holidays and for any reason, really."
3. El Caribeño

Dominican and Puerto Rican spot El Caribeño is another top choice. Yelpers give the business, located at 8065 Vernor Highway, 4.5 stars out of 23 reviews.
Owner Judi Hernandez, who learned to cook by shadowing her Dominican mother-in-law, per the Metro Times, offers a wide assortment of Latin Caribbean flavors. Here you can score empanadas, fried plantains, Dominican hamburgers and vegetarian fare. Specials change daily. Fresh juices and smoothies are also available.
4. Camino Real Mexican Grill

Camino Real Mexican Grill is another neighborhood go-to, with four stars out of 28 Yelp reviews. Head over to 1100 Central Ave. to see for yourself. This spot serves up authentic Mexican fare with dishes like ceviche tostada along with fajitas, tacos, burritos and quesadillas.
"Simply the best Mexican restaurant in the area," wrote Yelp reviewer Eva T. "They have delicious salsa and guacamole. Their marinated pork quesadilla is top notch! ... So far what I have tried was amazing! I'd recommend to anyone!"
5. Mangonadas Del Barrio

Then there's Mangonadas Del Barrio, a family-owned business that offers traditional Mexican snacks, smoothies and fresh juices. You can find the shop, which has earned four stars out of 13 reviews on Yelp, at 1210 Lawndale St. The dessert spot has a second location on Vernor Highway.
Yelp reviewer Al P. had high praise for the shop: "Mangonadas Del Barrio has treasures for every palate. We love those iced-just-right fruit cups, big fruity flavored drinks and ice cream treats. ... This place has thousands of regular customers, a small game room for birthday parties, restroom and really nice patio to enjoy your scrumptious dessert."
