Mexicali Rose, Oakland's oldest Mexican restaurant, is shutting its doors after nine decades, the San Jose Mercury News has reported.
“After serving the Bay Area for 91 years it is time to retire Mexicali Rose," reads a message posted to the business' door. "We will be closing on June 29, 2018. We would like to thank our loyal customers for keeping us in business for four generations. You will be missed. 1927-2018.”
The restaurant — a popular spot for families, office workers and employees at nearby Oakland Police Department — was known for its diverse clientele, generous portions of comfort food, and margaritas.
“I was upset when I heard its closing,” Ernest Hardmon III told the paper. “This is a place where friends met friends. We welcomed all here.”
Hardmon, a regular for thirty years, said he suspected things might be winding down when the restaurant began closing on Mondays a few weeks prior. "I felt they were easing into it," he said.

Over the weekend, Bay Area neighbors and patrons traveling from as far away as Stockton lined up for one last meal.
“I’ve been coming here before I can even drink,” said Hayward resident Yvonne Bolden.
It's not clear what will happen to the pink stucco building once the restaurant closes. Some hope that new owners will take over and continue its legacy.
We reached out to the restaurant for more details about its closure. A recorded message revealed it would be closed today and will reopen tomorrow 11:30 a.m.–8:30 p.m. On Friday, the eatery's last day of service, the restaurant will be open from 11 a.m.–9:30 p.m.
Thanks for the tip, Al M!
