Topping the list is breakfast and brunch spot Earth Bistro Cafe. It specializes in contemporary American cuisine, often with a Cuban twist. Located at 11100 Clifton Ave., it's the highest rated business in the neighborhood, boasting 4.5 stars out of 136 reviews on Yelp.

On the menu, offerings include a Cuban panini sandwich with black forest ham, marinated pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, grilled pineapples, chipotle aioli and homemade mustard spread, all on ciabatta bread. Many of the items are vegetarian, like the Caribbean veggie tostadas, and most every dish can be made without meat or dairy.

Next up is vintage and consignment spot Flower Child, at 11508 Clifton Blvd. From 1950s modern to 1970s kitsch, Flower Child sells furniture, art, housewares, clothes and accessories from its two floors of retail space. Some corners are made to look like period rooms, complete with mannequins in vintage clothes with coordinating furniture and decorations. With 4.5 stars out of 49 reviews on Yelp, it's proven to be a local favorite.

3. Liquid Planet

Liquid Planet at 11002 Clifton Blvd. is a juice and smoothie spot that also serves salads, pita sandwiches and other healthy fare. It's another top choice in the neighborhood, with Yelpers giving it four stars out of 77 reviews.

Juice combinations include the Sun Kiss, made with carrot, apple and orange juices and fresh ginger. Smoothies run the gamut from the classic strawberry, banana and apple juice, to the PBJ of peanut butter, strawberries, cherries, banana, honey and skim milk. Have a bigger appetite? Try the Chili Thai bowl: brown rice with chicken, snow peas, carrots, red peppers, broccoli and crunchy chow mein noodles, covered in chili Thai sauce.

Brothers Lounge is not one bar but three: there's the neighborhood-style pub, a wine bar and a concert hall. The pub serves upscale pub food, like fried lobster macaroni and cheese, short rib sandwich and sirloin strip steak, with a handful of TVs tuned to the game.

The wine bar features its own small stage for live music. The main stage hosts local and traveling jazz, blues and rock bands. Throughout, you'll find craft beer, wine and martinis. It's another Edgewater go-to, with four stars out of 63 Yelp reviews. Head over to 11609 Detroit Ave. to see for yourself.

Finally, check out Now That's Class Lounge, a music venue, dive bar and vegan food spot at 11213 Detroit Ave. The venue typically books punk and garage rock on its small stage.

Cheap beer and a shot is a common drink order, though cocktails and craft beer are available. Not all the food served here is vegan, but you'll regularly find such edibles as vegan macaroni and cheese and barbecue tofu. Oh, and there is an indoor skate ramp. Now That's Class Lounge has earned four stars out of 48 reviews on Yelp.
