Paying attention to monthly U.S. jobs reports, and curious what they mean for local workers? Here's how the current employment market looks across industries in Pittsburgh.

Computer software, one of the top industries that has consistently added large numbers of jobs in recent months according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, is also one of the top industries posting new jobs last month in the 'Burgh.

Health care and hospitals ranked first in the city last month, followed by computer software and hardware, banking and financial services, retail, and recruiting and staffing, according to data from jobs site Glassdoor. 

If you're a registered nurse, you'll find plenty of opportunities for hiring and advancement in Pittsburgh. Registered nurses represented the position most in demand on the hiring market last month, with professional staff, team members, sales associates, and software engineers filling out the top five most job openings by occupation.

Many of the city's top industries reflect national trends; one is unique to the area. Of the five industries hiring the most workers in Pittsburgh last month, health care, computer software, retail, and recruiting were in the top five nationwide; finance ranked third in Pittsburgh but ninth across the U.S.

However, differences in how employees rate their employers across industries in Pittsburgh differ from patterns in other parts of the country. Companies with the highest employee ratings in the U.S. appear in real estate, accounting and law, internet tech, computer software, and recruiting. Among local employers currently hiring in the city, top ratings appear in construction, aerospace, education, personal care, and consulting.

Among highly rated companies with new job listings last month, employees gave Pittsburgh-based construction companies an average overall rating of 4.46 out of five stars in the city, while local aerospace and defense companies receive an average rating of 4.28 stars. That's compared to an average rating of 2.94 stars for companies in health care, or 2.97 stars for software and hardware companies, the industry with the second most current job openings in the area.

Health care establishments like Highmark Health, UPMC, and CVS Health are recruiting large numbers of registered nurses, professional staff, and medical assistants. And construction companies like TUDI Mechanical Systems, dck worldwide, and Roto-Rooter are currently bringing on sales representatives, service technicians, and project managers.
