A new Latin American fusion restaurant has made its debut in the neighborhood. The fresh addition, called Gran Castor, is located at 2950 Rochester Road in Troy.
The eclectic space features a centrally located indoor fire pit, quirky cactus-printed wallpaper and colorful, Aztec-inspired decor.
Appetizers include sweet pea guacamole, made with avocado, English peas, scallions and cilantro, topped with spiced pepitas and corn chips on the side; a queso dip made with three-cheese sour cream baked with pico de gallo and tangy chipotle; and wood-fired Argentinian breadsticks.
Fusion tacos include the banh mi, made with pulled pork tossed in Korean barbecue sauce, red cabbage, pickled carrot and cilantro-sesame aioli; pollo asado chargrilled in lime and cumin; and curried oxtail cooked in tomato curry, turmeric onion and fried epazote.
The fresh arrival currently has a 3.5-star rating out of 22 reviews on Yelp.
Loren C., who reviewed the new eatery on Aug. 27, wrote, "The ambiance blew us away. There is so much detail to the building that is intriguing. But the food was absolutely to die for. We loved the sticky ribs. They are a must have. The queso was also amazing."
And Zachary R. wrote, "The decor is great, and the food and service are even better. My friends and I tried some of the pizzas, as well as the queso dip and it was easily some of my favorite I've ever had."
Gran Castor is open from 4–10 p.m. Monday–Thursday, 4–11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 4–9 p.m. on Sunday.
