A new Caribbean restaurant has opened for business in the Jefferson-Chalmers neighborhood. Located at 14628 E. Jefferson Ave. in Detroit, the fresh arrival is called Norma G's.
The business, which started as a food truck in 2015, is helmed by owner and chef Lester Gouvia and is the first sit-down, full-service restaurant to open in the neighborhood in three decades, the Michigan Chronicle reports.
On the menu, look for dishes like goat and vegetables marinated in house seasoning and sauteed in yellow curry sauce, slow-cooked oxtail sliders and the vegan melongene (diced eggplant and sweet onion sauteed in marinara sauce, served with jasmine rice). Round out your meal with sides and appetizers like jerk wings, cod fish balls, Trinidad-style potato salad and fried plantains. (See the full menu here.)
Norma G's has nine reviews on Yelp so far, which gives it a 3.5-star rating.
Kirby C., who was the first Yelper to review the new spot on Aug. 22, wrote, "Amazing new restaurant! Everyone was friendly/helpful, the service was great and the food was delicious! I tried a little bit of everything — cod fish balls, beef patties, chicken pelau, coocoo and callaloo and mango tango for dessert. Everything tasted fresh and the seasoning on everything was perfect."
Rick B. added, "I'm so happy this place just opened right around the corner from me in Jefferson-Chalmers. Jerk chicken was amazing."
Swing on by to take a peek for yourself: Norma G's is open from 4:30 p.m.–midnight on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, and 4:30 p.m.–12:30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. (It's closed on Monday.)
