Locally, among labor-intensive industries like farming, manufacturing, cars and construction, only manufacturing produced more new jobs than most other local industries last month, according to listings on jobs site Glassdoor. Services industries like health care and retail are hiring large numbers of new workers in Charlotte. High-tech industries focused on engineering and computing are currently offering fewer jobs in the area.

However, the ranks differ when considering which industries offer the best places to work. By this metric, tech is performing better; local employers in computer software and internet tech received high overall ratings among those currently hiring in the area.

Registered nurses represented the position most in demand on the hiring market last month, with sales associates, retail representatives, project managers, and team members filling out the top five most job openings by occupation.

Many current industry trends in the city reflect patterns at the national level, while some are more unique to the area. Of the five industries recruiting the most workers in Charlotte last month, health care, recruiting, and retail were in the top five nationwide; finance and manufacturing industries ranked second and fourth in Charlotte but eighth and seventh across the U.S., respectively.

Differences in how employees rate their employers across industries in Charlotte are similar to patterns seen across the country. Companies with the highest employee ratings in the U.S. appear in internet tech, accounting and law, real estate, computer software, and recruiting. Companies in four of those industries are also rated highest among those hiring this month in Charlotte.

Among highly rated companies with new job listings last month, employees gave Charlotte-based local government offices an average overall rating of 3.7 out of five stars in the city; local computer software and hardware companies earn an average rating of 3.66 stars, real estate firms an average rating of 3.65 stars, and tech companies around 3.64 stars.
