The rural Granite Falls, North Carolina school became the only one in the district affected by the outage, and staff stayed on site until every child was safely picked up or bused home.
The break struck just 10 days after Caldwell County Schools opened its doors for the 2026–2027 school year on August 24, according to WHKY. As WBTV reported, the cause of the break and how long repairs would take remained unclear Thursday, and officials had not confirmed whether classes would resume Friday. Baton Elementary sits at 1400 Baton School Road and serves prekindergarten through fifth grade as one of 26 public schools in the Caldwell County Schools district, per Niche.
Buses Rerouted, After-School Programs Scrapped
School transportation staff re-ran the morning bus routes so riders could be dropped back at their regular stops, officials said, while other parents were told they could pick up their children directly from campus. Both morning and after-school programs were canceled for the day. Under district policy, the fee-based WrapAround extended day program is automatically canceled at any campus hit by an unscheduled early dismissal or emergency closure, according to Caldwell County Schools.
The timing added extra pressure on families and administrators alike. Thursday's closure left Friday as the only remaining instructional day before Caldwell County's three-day Labor Day weekend, running from Saturday through Monday, September 7, according to the district's calendar.
A Rural Utility Already Under Strain
Water service to the Baton community comes from Baton Water Corporation, a non-profit utility founded in 1970 that buys bulk treated water from the City of Lenoir to supply more than 7,000 residents in the area, per tapwaterdata.com. The utility had already placed all its customers under Stage 2 mandatory conservation restrictions in May, requiring a 10 percent cut in water usage after the Catawba-Wateree Drought Management Group declared severe regional drought conditions, according to Baton Water Corporation.
North Carolina Administrative Code requires public schools to maintain running water under pressure for drinking, handwashing, and toilet operation, per the Cornell Law School Legal Information Institute. That sanitation mandate left Baton Elementary administrators with little choice but to dismiss classes the moment water pressure was lost.
Not the First Main Break Near Granite Falls
Southern Caldwell County has seen this kind of disruption before. A major water main break along Highway 321 in Granite Falls triggered a boil water advisory across the area in August 2024, disrupting both municipal and county distribution lines, according to a Facebook post from Caldwell County government. Local outlet Catawba Valley News & Weather confirmed that Thursday's break was isolated to Baton Elementary, with no other schools in Granite Falls or nearby towns reporting lost water pressure.
It remains unclear whether Thursday's failure originated in the school's internal plumbing or along Baton Water Corporation's main feeder line. District officials had not said by Thursday afternoon how long repairs would take or whether the campus would reopen before the long holiday weekend.
