Exploring new job opportunities, or just interested in Seattle’s evolving employment landscape? Here’s a snapshot of how the latest labor trends are playing out in the city right now.

Locally, services industries like retail and health care are bringing on large numbers of new employees in Seattle, among the top five in total jobs posted this month on jobs site Glassdoor. Technology is also producing jobs, with internet tech and computer software among the top industries hiring in the area last month.

However, the ranks differ when considering which industries offer the best places to work. One service industry ranks high: employees gave high average ratings to Seattle-based firms hiring in the retail industry, according to Glassdoor company profiles. Among high-tech industries, only internet tech made the top five in employee satisfaction.

If you're a software development engineer, you're seeing plenty of opportunities for hiring and advancement in Seattle. Software development engineers represented the category with the most new job listings last month, with product managers, program managers, technical program managers, and software development managers filling out the top five most job openings by occupation.

Many current industry trends in the city reflect patterns at the national level; one is unique to the area. Of the five industries recruiting the most workers in Seattle last month, retail, computer software, health care, and recruiting were in the top five nationwide; internet tech ranked first in Seattle but 10th across the U.S.

Differences in how employees rate their employers across industries in Seattle also share some similarities with patterns in other parts of the country. Companies with the highest employee ratings in the U.S. appear in internet tech, accounting and law, real estate, computer software, and recruiting. Companies in two of those industries—real estate and internet tech—are also rated highest among those recruiting this month in Seattle.

Among highly rated companies with new job listings last month, employees gave Seattle-based schools and educational organizations an average overall rating of 3.89 out of five stars in the city; local real estate firms earn an average rating of 3.87 stars, internet companies an average rating of 3.82 stars, and consulting firms around 3.77 stars.

Interested in scoring a new position in an industry with lots of opportunities or stellar employee satisfaction ratings? Tech companies like Amazon and Inc. are hiring large numbers of software development engineers, product managers, and program managers.
