A new Southern restaurant and bar has debuted in Bloomfield. Called Sugar and Smoke, the new arrival is located at 4428 Liberty Ave.
Taking over where Jabo's Smoke House and Saloon once operated, Sugar and Smoke offers mostly traditional Southern and New Orleans-style dishes, albeit with many locally sourced ingredients and a sometimes modern flair.
Menu offerings include starters like charred Brussels sprouts with pine nuts, honey balsamic and shaved Parmesan, and a pulled pork sandwich on a toasted brioche bun. Rest assured that Southern favorites like fried green tomatoes, jambalaya and collard greens are also on offer.
There's a large patio where you can enjoy the food offerings along with a cocktail. Keep it Southern with the sazerac or the mint julep.
The new addition currently has a three-star rating out of 13 reviews on Yelp.
Karla D., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on Sept. 16, wrote, "My boyfriend had the gumbo that was packed with okra, rice, sausage and peppers. I had a taste of it and had trouble giving it back to him because it was simply fantastic. The chicken was fried Southern-style with a crisp breading that didn't taste greasy but instead exactly the way a good fried chicken should taste."
And Ja'Neen A. wrote, "The food there was well-seasoned and delicious, the decor was beautiful, and drinks were good. I will definitely come back to this place to enjoy their food."
Interested? Stop by to welcome the new business to the neighborhood. Sugar and Smoke is open from 11 a.m.–11 p.m. on Tuesday-Saturday and 11 a.m.–9 p.m. on Sunday. (It's closed on Monday.)
