As the latest U.S. jobs report hits newsstands, how did cities in the Boston area do in terms of new jobs added last month? And which industries and occupations are attracting workers to the area most?
Boston has risen to first place among U.S. cities in hiring for sales staff, according to new positions posted last month on jobs site Glassdoor. The city also ranked first in new job openings for business data analysts and payroll analysts.
Comparing across the country, Boston came in ahead of Newton, the U.S. city with the second-most new positions for sales staff last month. Newton does have a smaller population, at 88,317, compared to Boston's 658,279, according to 2016 estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Communities Survey.

Other occupations are also in high demand in greater Boston cities. For instance, Worcester ranked first among U.S. cities in new openings for residential counselors.
In terms of hiring by industry, Boston did best in transportation and logistics, placing second among U.S. cities in terms of total jobs added last month by local transportation and logistics companies. The city ranked third for new jobs added in the biotech industry, and fourth for health care jobs.
The top U.S. city for new positions in transportation and logistics last month was Los Angeles, while Cambridge topped the charts nationwide for new positions in biotech and pharmaceuticals.

If we focus on hiring by occupation relative to the local population, Boston is most competitive in demand for client technical specialists, placing eighth among US cities last month in per-capita openings for that skill set. The city ranked ninth in new jobs for solutions sales specialists and bioinformatics analysts, again relative to the local population.
Boston fell just behind Bethesda, Maryland in hiring for client technical specialists, while Emeryville, California topped the charts nationwide in per-capita positions for bioinformatics analysts. (Bethesda has a smaller population, bumping up its per-capita jobs ratio.)
Looking for new opportunities in a field with strong local demand? Companies like Mutual of Omaha and Audley Travel are bringing on sales staff, and other local employers like DraftKings are hiring business data analysts. And among competitive local industries, transportation and logistics companies like VPNE Parking Solutions and Massport are hiring valets, systems managers, and more.
