Topping the list is Capitol Hill Books. Packed full of literary treasures, the shop near Eastern Market sells used books, first editions and rare books.

Peruse the shelves for science fiction, philosophy, history, political and foreign language books. Mystery novels have their own room.

Located at 657 C St. SE in Capitol Hill, it is the highest-rated used bookstore in Washington, boasting 4.5 stars out of 154 reviews on Yelp.

2. Carpe Librum Pop-up

Next up is Carpe Librum Pop-Up. Having recently relocated from its bookstore of four years, Carpe Librum — "seize the book" in Latin — continues as a pop-up on the second floor of Union Station (50 Massachusetts Ave. NE). The store has received 4.5 stars out of 71 reviews on Yelp.

D.C. nonprofit Turning the Page is behind the pop-up, according to its site, with proceeds donated to parent-engagement programs in the city's public schools.

It boasts a vast selection of used books, CDs, DVDs and vinyl records, including best-sellers and hard-to-find classics.

3. Riverby Books

Riverby Books, located in a row house at 417 E. Capitol St. SE a few blocks from the Capitol, is another top choice. Its curated collection is well-organized, with sections for poetry, local history and children's books.

It features seating areas throughout, and offers complimentary afternoon tea. Yelpers give it 4.5 stars out of 27 reviews.

Looking to sell? Riverby also purchases books for cash or store credit.
