Topping the list is Caphe Banh Mi. Banh mi and phở are the specialties of the house. The sandwiches run from the traditional ham-and-pâté to grilled chicken lemongrass or even a spicy red curry ground beef "sloppy" banh mi. The phở is available with a variety of meats, or try a vegetarian version with tofu and chayote. Located one block off King Street, at 407 Cameron St. in Old Town, it is the highest rated Vietnamese restaurant in Alexandria, boasting four stars out of 909 reviews on Yelp.

2. Pho Viet Flare

Next up is Landmark-Van Dom's Pho Viet Flare, situated at 514 S. Van Dorn St., Suite B. This is a phở-focused spot, with 16 protein choices on the menu and even a "phở 101" section on its website. (Pro tip: add a little bit of the bean sprouts at a time to avoid over-cooling your broth). With four stars out of 304 reviews on Yelp, it has proven to be a local favorite.

3. Sunday In Saigon

Old Town North's Sunday In Saigon, located at 682 N. St. Asaph St., is another top choice, with Yelpers giving it four stars out of 171 reviews. An elegant-yet-funky atmosphere, with artistic references to 1960s Saigon, is the setting to enjoy Vietnamese cuisine from across the country. For example, you'll find bun cha ha noi from the North and bun bo hue from Central Vietnam. A brunch menu includes unlimited small plates and five-cent drinks.

4. Pho Huy

Pair your meal with fresh-squeezed lemonade, coconut juice or matcha milk tea. Head over to 4527 Duke St. to see for yourself.
