
Crime incidents in Newport Beach saw an overall decline last month, for the fifth month in a row, according to data from SpotCrime, which collects data from police agencies and validated sources.
Incidents fell by 6.6 percent, from 1,645 in December to 1,537 in January. Crime trends are often seasonal, and some of the most common offenses tend to decline in winter, which might partly explain the most recent downward trend.

The offenses most on the decline last month were burglary and assault. Burglary fell from 428 reported incidents in December to 379 in January. Assault incidents went from 51 to 36 for the month, or about a 29 percent decrease.
There were five shooting reports last month, and 186 theft incidents. Shooting incidents dropped from six offenses the previous month, while theft reports decreased by 12 incidents.
Among the few types of offenses that saw an uptick last month, robbery reports went from 27 to 33. Vandalism incidents rose from 21 to 25.

Looking at crime patterns in different areas of the city, Corona Del Mar saw the largest decline from December to January.
Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays produced the most reported crimes last month. The largest decrease from the previous month occurred on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays, while incidents on Thursdays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays went up. late afternoon, late morning and early afternoon continue to see the most crime incidents on average each day.
