The number of crime incidents in Newport Beach saw an overall increase last week, for the second week in a row, according to data from SpotCrime, which collects data from police agencies and validated sources. Incidents rose to 422 for the week of March 11, up from 334 the week before.

The specific offenses that increased the most were assault and burglary. Assault rose to 20 incidents last week, from 10 the week before. Burglary went from 84 to 92. Reports of assault have continued to grow for the last three weeks, while burglary incidents have been increasing for the last two weeks.

While somewhat smaller categories, there was also a considerable percentage increase in vandalism, from four incidents per week to 10, and in shootings, from zero to one incidents.

There were 42 reported theft incidents last week. That represents an increase from 40 incidents the previous week.

Among the few types of offenses that saw a downturn last week, reports of robbery went from four to three.

There were 254 reports of "other" crimes, an increase of 62 from the previous week. SpotCrime's broad "other" category includes a variety of offenses like fraud, trespassing, public disturbance and traffic violations. Of those incidents, 15 involved arrests, such as for drug possession, up from 13 reported arrests the week before.

Considering the concentration of crime across the city, Corona Del Mar continued to have the most reported incidents last week. Incidents in the neighborhood have been rising for two weeks in a row.

Regarding when crime most often occurs, Thursdays, Wednesdays and Sundays witnessed the most reported crimes last week. The largest increase from the previous week occurred on Thursdays, Wednesdays and Sundays, while incidents on Fridays, Mondays and Tuesdays went down. Comparing times of day, evening, late morning and late afternoon saw the most crime last week.
