The number of crime incidents in Milwaukee saw an overall increase last week, after a previous decline, according to data from SpotCrime, which collects data from police agencies and validated sources. Incidents rose to 3,480 for the week of April 1, up from 3,266 the week before.

The specific offenses that increased the most were assault and theft. Assault rose to 691 incidents last week, from 494 the week before. Theft went from 313 to 341.

While somewhat smaller categories, there was also a sizable percentage increase in robbery, from 38 incidents per week to 44, and in burglary, from 169 to 176 incidents.

Among the few types of offenses that saw a downturn last week, shootings went from 226 to 211, and vandalism fell from 167 to 158.

There were 1,859 reports of "other" crimes, even with the previous week. SpotCrime's broad "other" category includes a variety of offenses like fraud, trespassing, public disturbance and traffic violations. Of those incidents, 82 involved arrests, such as for drug possession, down from 113 reported arrests the week before.

As far as where crime is concentrated in the city, Harambee, Old North Milwaukee and North Division had the most reported incidents last week. Harambee and Old North Milwaukee were at the top of the list the previous week as well.

Clarke Square experienced the highest growth in crime. Crime reports in Harambee also rose for a fourth week, and incidents in Menomonee River Hills are up considerably as well.

Regarding when crime most often occurs, Sundays, Saturdays and Thursdays produced the most reported crimes last week. The largest increase from the previous week occurred on Sundays, Mondays and Saturdays, while incidents on Fridays went down. Comparing times of day, evening, after midnight and late night saw the most crime last week.
