Lady Bird

A California high school student plans to escape from her family and small town by going to college in New York, much to the disapproval of wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mother.

Boasting a Tomatometer Score of 99 percent and an Audience Score of 79 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, "Lady Bird" is a critical darling. The Chicago Reader's J. R. Jones said, "Gerwig finds a warmer part of herself when, unencumbered by any lab partner, she returns to her hometown with Lady Bird. One can only hope that, this time, she stays," while April Wolfe of the Village Voice called it, "A heartfelt coming-of-age story that perfectly captures the bittersweet transition from adolescence to dawning adulthood."

You can catch a special Mother's Day showing at Alamo Drafthouse Sloans Lake (4255 W. Colfax Ave.) at 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 12. Click here for showtimes and tickets.

Avengers: Endgame

After the devastating events of Avengers: Infinity War, the universe is in ruins due to the efforts of the Mad Titan, Thanos. With the help of remaining allies, the Avengers must assemble once more in order to undo Thanos' actions and restore order to the universe once and for all, no matter what consequences may be in store.

With a Tomatometer Score of 95 percent and an Audience Score of 79 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, "Avengers: Endgame" is the most buzzed-out film out in theaters right now.

"What you will be getting when you walk into an inevitably overstuffed movie theater is something singular that reflects our age in a way that none of the MCU films that preceded it have-indeed, very few Hollywood spectacles ever have," according to Oliver Jones of the Observer, while the San Diego Reader's Matthew Lickona called it, "A triumph of feeling: of itches scratched, of sorrows and angers eased, even of longings fulfilled."

Us

Husband and wife Gabe and Adelaide Wilson take their kids to their beach house expecting to unplug and unwind with friends. But as night descends, their serenity turns to tension and chaos when some shocking visitors arrive uninvited.

With a Tomatometer Score of 94 percent and an Audience Score of 65 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, "Us" has become a favorite since its release on March 22.

"Us revolves around an allegory that's more elastic and resistant to parsing than megahit Get Out," noted Alison Willmore of BuzzFeed News, while the Chicago Reader's Ben Sachs said, "... it achieves an insidious, lingering effect that's rarer in the horror genre."

9 to 5

Frank Hart is a pig. He takes advantage in the grossest manner of the women who work with him. When his three assistants manage to trap him in his own house they assume control of his department and productivity leaps, but just how long can they keep Hart tied up?

With a Tomatometer Score of 82 percent and an Audience Score of 73 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, this 1980 release has much to recommend it. Boston Globe's Bruce McCabe said, "This is one of the most delightful films of the year. It's an entertaining movie with a social and political point to make about office politics," and Variety's noted, "Although it can probably be argued that Patricia Resnick and director Colin Higgins' script [from a story by Resnick] at times borders on the inane, the bottom line is that this picture is a lot of fun."

Pokémon Detective Pikachu

In a world where people collect pocket-size monsters (pokemon) to do battle, a boy comes across an intelligent monster who seeks to be a detective.

Set to be released on Friday, May 10, "Pokémon Detective Pikachu" already has a Tomatometer Score of 71 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Slate's Sam Adams said, "In a world packed full of franchise-extending would-be blockbusters, there's something strangely appealing about its patchiness," while Rafer Guzman of Newsday stated, "Overall the movie is passably entertaining, though only the youngest viewers will feel it in their jellies."
