Next up, Spero Therapeutics raised $5.9 million in grant funding, in a round announced on July 16 and financed by the U.S. Department of Defense.

According to Crunchbase, "Spero Therapeutics is developing first-in-class therapeutics for treatment of Gram-negative infections. The company leverages a top-tier chemistry and microbiology team, an efficient virtual approach to drug development and a focus on high potential, novel mechanisms to fill the unmet need for early-stage therapeutics targeting serious bacterial infections."

Founded in 2013, the company has raised seven previous rounds, including a $75 million round in 2018.

Meanwhile, Leuko Labs raised $1.8 million in seed funding, announced on July 18. The round's investors were led by Good Growth Capital.

In total, Cambridge-based science and engineering companies have raised $38 million in venture funding over the past month and $4.3 billion over the past year.
