The number of crime incidents in Denver saw an overall bump last month, for the fifth month in a row, according to data from CrimeoMeter, which collects data from police agencies and validated sources.
Incidents rose by 5.4%, from 7,634 in June to 8,044 in July. This month’s increase in crime incidents puts the monthly total at about 3% below the same month a year ago. Crime trends often contain recurring patterns, based on seasons and other local events, making a year-over-year comparison most relevant.
Auto burglary and vandalism incidents increased the most from the previous month. Auto burglary rose from 699 reported incidents in June to 789 in July, and has grown by 10 incidents since July of last year. Vandalism incidents went from 492 to 567 for the month, or about a 15% increase. Vandalism reports are up even more from a year ago.
While somewhat smaller categories, there was also a notable percentage increase last month in burglary, from 320 incidents per month to 389, and in harassment, from 276 to 326. Both burglary and harassment have increased since the same month last year.
There were 11 arson reports last month, and 588 assault incidents. Arson has gone up by about 37 percent since July of last year, and assault has increased by about 12 percent.
Among the few types of offenses that saw a downturn last month, auto theft reports went from 532 to 488. Alcohol-related offenses fell from 130 to 125, and robbery incidents went down from 103 to 99. All three have seen an overall downward trend since the same time last year.
Looking at crime patterns in different areas of the city, Capitol Hill, Five Points and Baker saw the largest increase from June to July. Congress Park, Kennedy and Sloan Lake also saw considerable percentage increases in crime offenses for the month, although they continue to have lower overall crime levels. Over the past year, crime has gone up the most in Globeville, and declined the most in East Colfax.
Wednesdays, Mondays and Tuesdays saw the most reported crimes last month. The largest increase from the previous month occurred on Wednesdays, Mondays and Tuesdays, while incidents on Sundays, Saturdays and Thursdays went down. Comparing times of day, early afternoon, late afternoon and midday saw the most crime last month on average each day.
