New cinema, The Beacon now open in Columbia CityPhoto: J W./Yelp

A new cinema has opened its doors in the neighborhood. Located at 4405 Rainier Ave. South in Columbia City, the fresh arrival is called The Beacon.

The Beacon is a single-screen movie theater offering unique film showings — from silent black and white films to second-run movies, according to Crosscut. The 50-seat theater also features movie series on certain days of the week, like Anime Sundays and Horror Mondays.

The theater also serves popcorn, soda and beer.

Upcoming screenings include "Nine to Five," "The Wolf of Wall Street," "Society," "Eyes Wide Shut" and more.

With a 4.5-star rating out of three reviews on Yelp so far, the new cinema has been warmly received by patrons.

Shawn N., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on August 9, wrote, "What a charming and lovely little, single-theatre cinema we found on Rainier Avenue. The seats were comfy and set stadium-style; no bad seat in the house. It gave the feeling like we were at home watching a great film, on a huge screen, with 40-plus of our closest friends."

And J W. wrote, "Where they differ from other regional indies like SIFF Cinema, is superior repertory programming, thematic and conceptual series, and a challenging total disregard (in the best way) for genre constraints."

The Beacon is now open daily at 4405 Rainier Ave. South., so stop in to try it for yourself.
