As fans of cronuts and cake pops can attest, food trends come and go. So how can you tell which tastes are trending right this minute?

We took a data-driven look at the question, using Yelp to discover which eateries have been getting a notable increase in attention this month.

To find out who made the list, we looked at Honolulu businesses on Yelp by category and counted how many reviews each received. Rather than compare them based on number of reviews alone, we calculated a percentage increase in reviews over the past month, and tracked businesses that consistently increased their volume of reviews to identify statistically significant outliers compared to past performance.

Da HI Brew

Open since December 2017, this breakfast and brunch spot, which offers coffee, tea and more, is trending compared to other businesses categorized as "Breakfast & Brunch" on Yelp.

Citywide, breakfast and brunch spots saw a median 1.8% increase in new reviews over the past month, but Da HI Brew saw a 15.6% increase, maintaining a healthy 4.5-star rating throughout. Moreover, on a month-to-month basis Da HI Brew's review count increased by more than 110%.

It's not the only trending outlier in the breakfast and brunch category: Moke’s Bread and Breakfast - Kaimuki has seen a 26.6% increase in reviews.

Located at 1696 Ala Moana Blvd. in Waikiki, Da HI Brew offers lattes, fresh pastries, macchiatos, cold brew coffee, turmeric lattes and more. 

Da HI Brew is open from 6:30 a.m.–2 p.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m.–2 p.m. on weekends.

Haus Supper Club

Whether or not you've been hearing buzz about Ala Moana-Kakaako's Haus Supper Club, the lounge, sushi bar and karaoke spot is a hot topic according to Yelp review data.

While businesses categorized as "Sushi Bars" on Yelp saw a median 1.7% increase in new reviews over the past month, Haus Supper Club bagged a 32.3% increase in new reviews within that time frame, maintaining a superior four-star rating.

Open at 1450 Ala Moana Blvd. since June, Haus Supper Club offers oysters, spicy ahi poke, spring rolls, grilled elites and more on the menu.

Haus Supper Club is open from 4:30 p.m.–2 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday, 4:30 p.m.–4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday and 8 p.m.–1 a.m. on Sunday. (It's closed on Monday and Tuesday.)

Kaku's Sushi & Seafood Buffet

Waikiki's Kaku's Sushi & Seafood Buffet is also making waves. Open since May at 2330 Kalakaua Ave., International Marketplace, the sushi bar and buffet spot, which offers seafood and more, has seen a 23.1% bump in new reviews over the last month, compared to a median review increase of 1.3% for all businesses tagged "Seafood" on Yelp.

Kaku's Sushi & Seafood Buffet offers sushi, fried shrimp, calamari, mussels, fried rice and more. Over the past month, it's maintained a mixed three-star rating among Yelpers.

Kaku's Sushi & Seafood Buffet is open from 11:30 a.m.–2 p.m. and 5:30–9:30 p.m. daily.

Chengdu Taste Honolulu

Ala Moana-Kakaako's Chengdu Taste Honolulu is the city's buzziest noodle spot by the numbers.

The Sichuan spot, which offers noodles and more and opened at 808 Sheridan St., Suite 209, in 2016, increased its new review count by 21.1% over the past month, an outlier when compared to the median new review count of 1.4% for the Yelp category "Noodles." It outperformed the previous month by gaining 1.5 times more reviews than expected based on past performance.

Chengdu Taste Honolulu offers fried rice, jelly noodles, dumplings, tan tan noodles, kung pho chicken and more on the menu.

Chengdu Taste Honolulu is open from 11 a.m.–3 p.m. and 5–9 p.m. daily.

TEX 808 BBQ + BREWS

The popular TEX 808 BBQ + BREWS is currently on the upswing in the bar category on Yelp.

While businesses categorized as "Bars" on Yelp saw a median 1.2% increase in new reviews over the past month, this bar, which offers barbecue and more, increased its new reviews by 22.4% — and kept its rating consistent at four stars.

Open for business at 333D Keahole St. since June, TEX 808 BBQ + BREWS offers chicken wings, pulled pork, barbecue turkey, brisket, cocktails, beer and more.

TEX 808 BBQ + BREWS is open from 11 a.m.–10 p.m. on Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m.–11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 7 a.m.–9 p.m. on Sunday.
