Food trends come and go. So how can you tell which tastes are trending right this minute?

We took a data-driven look at the question, using Yelp to uncover which eateries have been in the limelight this month.

To find out who made the list, we looked at San Jose businesses on Yelp by category and counted how many reviews each received. Rather than compare them based on number of reviews alone, we calculated a percentage increase in reviews over the past month, and tracked businesses that consistently increased their volume of reviews to identify statistically significant outliers compared to past performance.

Slapfish

Open since January 2019, this popular spot to score fish and chips is trending compared to other businesses categorized as "Seafood" on Yelp.

Citywide, seafood spots saw a median 1.1% increase in new reviews over the past month, but Slapfish saw an 11.9% increase, maintaining a mixed 3.5-star rating throughout. Moreover, on a month-to-month basis Slapfish's review count increased by more than 220%.

It's not the only trending outlier in the seafood category: Claw Shack has seen an 8.5% increase in reviews, and Poke House and Mariscos Costa Alegre have seen 6 and 5.7% increases, respectively.

Located at 5297 Prospect Road, Suite 40 in West San Jose, Slapfish offers lobster rolls, New England clam chowder and fish and chips.

Slapfish is open from 11 a.m.–9 p.m. daily.

Super Duper Burgers

Whether or not you've been hearing buzz about West San Jose's Super Duper Burgers, the traditional American spot, which offers burgers and more, is a hot topic according to Yelp review data.

While businesses categorized as "American (Traditional)" on Yelp saw a median 0.9% increase in new reviews over the past month, Super Duper Burgers bagged a 7.6% increase in new reviews within that time frame, maintaining a strong four-star rating.

There's more that's trending on San Jose's traditional American scene: 7 Stars Bar & Grill has seen a 4% increase in reviews, and Cafe Rosalena has seen a 0.7% bump.

Open at 5399 Prospect Road since December 2018, Super Duper Burgers offers garlic fries, chicken burgers, milkshakes and more.

Super Duper Burgers is open from 8 a.m.–10 p.m. daily.

Tostadas

Downtown San Jose's Tostadas is also making waves. Open since June 2019 at 304 E. Santa Clara St., Suite A, the well-established Mexican and breakfast and brunch spot has seen an 11.7% bump in new reviews over the last month, compared to a median review increase of 1.6% for all businesses tagged "Mexican" on Yelp.

There's more than one hot spot trending in San Jose's Mexican category: Chipotle Mexican Grill has seen a 2.1% increase in reviews.

Tostadas offers shrimp, chorizo, chicken and crab tostadas, as well as tamales, burritos, cocktails and more. Over the past month, it's maintained a strong four-star rating among Yelpers.

Tostadas is open from 7 a.m.–9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 7 a.m.–10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
