Blue Wisp Big Band Concert

From the event description:

Founded in January of 1980 by drummer John Von Ohlen and trumpeter Don Johnson, the Blue Wisp Big Band got its start in and its name from the late Blue Wisp Jazz Club. Von Ohlen, a native of Indianapolis, moved to the Cincinnati area after many years on the road playing with world class jazz orchestras, most notably those of Stan Kenton and Woody Herman. The band continued to perform at the Blue Wisp Jazz Club in Cincinnati on Wednesday nights until its closure in the summer of 2014. After a six month tenure at Japp’s Annex in downtown Cincinnati, a short stint at Pirate’s Den in Westwood and three years at the Urban Artifact in Northside, the band has a new home at Caffè Vivace in Walnut Hills playing on Wednesday evenings.

When: Wednesday, Dec. 18, 8-10:30 p.m.

Dreamscapes

From the event description:

Salon 21 invites audiences to experience a musical meditation on the nature of dreams, both abandoned and actualized with mezzo-soprano Lauren McAllister and pianist Stephen Variames. The program will feature pieces by Robert Schumann, Jake Heggie and a premiere by Variames himself. Schumann’s setting of Queen Mary Stuart’s heartfelt words speaks to the dreams she held for her homeland, her family and her soul. Variames offers an exploration of texts by Edgar Allen Poe. The night will close with Heggie’s 'Into the Fire,' which offers a glimpse into the life of brilliant sculptor Camille Claudel and her tumultuous relationship with her lover and fellow sculptor, Auguste Rodin.

When: Thursday, Dec. 19, 7-8 p.m.
Where: Alice F. and Harris K. Weston Art Gallery, 650 Walnut St.
