The Bay Area's shelter-in-place order has brought countless events usually held as in-person gatherings online. We're aiming to support local businesses in San Francisco and Oakland by highlighting five of these events each day.

Humanizing Education in the Fight for Black Lives

Join the University of San Francisco School of Education's Center for Humanizing Research for the first of a series of summer conversations.

This virtual panel discussion will feature Kihana Miraya Ross, assistant professor at Northwestern University; Savannah Shange, assistant professor of critical race and ethnic studies at UC Santa Cruz; and Micia Mosely, executive director of the Black Teacher Project.

Happy Hour Chat with Artists from Cinderella

Before tuning into Gioachino Rossini's Cinderella this weekend, join the SF Opera for a happy hour chat with artists from the production. Participate in a live Q&A session and meet former SF Opera Adler Fellows Efraín Solís and Maria Valdes, as well as singer Christian Van Horn. Grab a drink, find a comfy spot, and learn more about the artists before streaming their performance on the weekend.

Curator Tour of "Labor of Love"

Hear from the The GLBT Historical Society for a virtual tour of the online exhibition, "Labor of Love: The Birth of San Francisco Pride, 1970-1980." The exhibition’s co-curators, Gerard Koskovich, Don Romesburg and Amy Sueyoshi will lead a special guided tour of the exhibition, explaining their curatorial choices and demonstrating how San Francisco’s LGBTQ community forged the internationally renowned annual celebration that would come to be known as Pride.

Manny's Virtual Trivia: The Census

The census is an important benchmark in U.S. politics, determining how federal funding and representation in congress are allocated to communities. Mission-based community space Manny's is dedicating one of its virtual get-togethers to the census, to help San Franciscans understand why it's so important.

Get ready for virtual trivia that will teach you all you need to know, with questions such as: When did the census come about? What is its political history? And What is its significance in current politics?

Breaking Bread with Dominique Crenn & buildOn

Join chef Dominique Crenn for an evening of nourishing food and community conversation. She will speak about how restaurants are facing the challenges of COVID-19. Expect a one-hour program, including a Q&A, and a Crenn Kit from Atelier Crenn delivered to your door. Deliveries will be made within 40 miles of the Atelier Crenn restaurant at 3127 Fillmore St.

The Crenn Kit will feature a four-course meal with video preparation instructions. The proceeds from this event will support buildOn’s Oakland programming. The nonprofit aims to break the cycle of poverty, illiteracy and low expectations, through service and education.
