Aila Markpol, a 42-year-old live-in caretaker, was recently sentenced to two years in prison for stealing $229k from a couple in their 80s with dementia while she was employed with them in San Bruno, per Henry Lee KTVU's Twitter update today. As part of her plea deal, Markpol is ordered to pay back $160,506 as part of plea deal in restitution.

According to a San Mateo Daily Journal article, Markpol pleaded no contest to elder abuse and was facing up to three years in state prison. The District Attorney's Office initially accused her of stealing at least $229,000 from the couple over six months, from January to June 2022. This theft began within the first month of her employment with the elderly couple.

Henry Lee's account posted that Markpol was charged with theft from elder and identity theft by the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office. It was found that she abused her position of trust to obtain the couple's bank information and subsequently used the stolen money for various personal purposes such as rides on Lyft, casino visits, and hotel stays.
