On January 23rd, a tragic mass shooting occurred at two farms in Half Moon Bay, just a few miles south of San Francisco, affecting the immigrant farm worker community. Pedro Felix Romero Perez, one of eight victims, shared his harrowing experience in a recent interview. Romero Perez and his late brother, Jose, had come to the U.S from Oaxaca, Mexico to work at California Terra Garden, seeking a better life. The shooter, Chunli Zhao, knocked on their door, fatally shot Jose, and wounded Pedro Felix.

Romero Perez, who survived despite being shot five times, is unsure why they were targeted by Zhao. The language barrier made it difficult for them to communicate with the shooter, who spoke only Mandarin. Zhao, currently facing seven murder charges and one attempted murder charge, admitted to the killings and referred to possible mental illness during a jailhouse interview.
