On Saturday, July 22, a 29-year-old man was shot and killed in a tragic incident near Chollas Creek in the City Heights neighborhood of San Diego, causing concern among local residents who fear escalating crime rates and the growth of the nearby homeless encampment. The victim, whose name is yet to be released pending notification of family members was involved in an altercation with two other men before the fatal shooting occurred, resulting in the suspects fleeing in a light-colored vehicle heading eastbound on Chollas Parkway, per NBC San Diego.
The victim was found with at least one gunshot wound in a ravine near Chollas Parkway and 54th Street, sparking an extensive investigation by the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) and the temporary shutdown of the Chollas Parkway in both directions for several hours, as Fox 5 San Diego reports. Authorities believe that the victim was involved in an argument with the suspects, which ultimately led to the suspect pulling out a firearm and shooting the victim. At the time of writing, one suspect has been arrested, although the police are continuing their search for the remaining suspect and urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
This incident has also spurred concerns among City Heights residents, who worry about the correlation between the growing homeless encampment near the area and the escalating crime levels. ABC 10 noted that some neighbors have emphasized an increase in police presence and emergency sirens in the neighborhood in recent months, causing distress and frustration for those living nearby.
Christopher Ravalli, a concerned local resident, shared his insight with ABC 10 News, stating, "I see the police at night going up and down the road up and hear the sirens now more. It’s sad…and that’s proof. Somebody lost their life." The tragic loss of life in this incident highlights the growing concern for safety in the City Heights community, and subsequently, the need for authorities to address both the homeless encampment and what residents say is related crime rates plaguing the neighborhood.
