In an audacious attempt to deceive law enforcement, smugglers cloned a U.S. Border Patrol vehicle in a recent incident near the Calexico border east of San Diego, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). What's more concerning is that this is not the first time such a method has been used, demonstrating the lengths to which transnational criminal organizations will go in order to smuggle people and contraband into the United States.

On July 22, authorities in Mexico discovered a cloned U.S. Border Patrol truck and arrested 17 individuals suspected of being smuggled into the country. The suspects were dressed in Border Patrol uniforms and were using a white truck with markings similar to those of the Border Patrol to evade detection. Univision reports that the fake vehicle had a license plate K 87392 and was complete with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) images on the side.

Cloning police and Border Patrol vehicles is a nefarious strategy employed by these criminal organizations, and this latest incident is part of a pattern. In September 2022, El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents seized another cloned Border Patrol vehicle, this time a Chevrolet Tahoe while arresting a United States citizen in Calexico. That Chevrolet Tahoe lied in wait near Exit 6 and attempted to enter the United States via Highway 98, before crossing paths with El Centro station's Remote Video Surveillance System Operators, who alerted the relevant authorities.

But these events are not limited to recent years. A similar case arose in 2015, when Laredo Sector Border Patrol agents arrested a male suspect and halted a human smuggling operation that used a cloned Border Patrol Tahoe to transport 12 illegal immigrants crammed inside the vehicle. Authorities were able to intercept the smuggling attempt, thanks to the vigilance and keen observation of the Border Patrol agents who noticed the suspicious government vehicle on the road.

As these incidents illustrate, criminal organizations are willing to employ any tactic in order to deceive both law enforcement officials and the communities they serve in their quest for illicit profits. In response to these alarming events, Mario Martinez, Chief of the Laredo Sector Border Patrol, urged the public to remain vigilant as both private and public sectors play a key role in ensuring a secured border and public safety.

Despite the increasingly inventive methods and tactics employed by these criminal enterprises, the U.S. Border Patrol and their international partners remain committed to securing the nation's borders and implementing measures that would thwart such smuggling attempts. For instance, the joint efforts between the El Centro Sector Border Patrol and the Direccion de Seguridad Publica Municipal in Mexicali led to the quick apprehension of the 17 individuals and the clone truck from the Calexico border incident on July 22.
