In a display of collaboration among various U.S. agencies and the Mexican Navy (SEMAR), over 11,600 pounds of cocaine and 5,500 pounds of marijuana, worth an estimated $158 million, were intercepted and offloaded in San Diego by the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Steadfast, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. The operation not only underscored the strong ties between the U.S. and SEMAR but also resulted in the seizure of five tons of illicit narcotics, which would have reached American soil.
According the National Institute of Health (NIH), the "fatal dose of cocaine has been estimated to be 1.2 g, but there are reports of severe adverse effects from doses as low as 20 mg," meaning that the siezed shipment of cocaine alone was enough to kill about 4.4 million people, or roughly 3.2x the population of San Diego proper.
The interdictions, part of ongoing counter-narcotics patrols off the coast of the Eastern Pacific Ocean between May and July, were carried out by the intrepid crews of the Coast Guard Cutters Vigilant, Mohawk, and Steadfast with a mission of combating transnational organized crime, disrupting drug flow routes, and preventing a significant amount of drugs from finding their way into the hands of American citizens. Rear Adm. Andrew Sugimoto, commander, Coast Guard Eleventh District, commended the crews as being “unmatched” by other agencies.
Numerous U.S. agencies, including the Departments of Defense, Justice—and Homeland Security, cooperated in the effort to combat and dismantle these transnational organized crime networks, with other active participants, such as the Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection, FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, joining forces with our international partner, the Mexican Navy (SEMAR); this kind of inter-agency cooperation is essential for the success of such operations, exemplified by the size and scale of the drug seizures in this case, as reported by ABC 10 News.
Cmdr. Brock Eckel, commanding officer of the Steadfast, expressed his pride and gratitude for the dedication and resilience exhibited by his crewmembers during the multi-month operation, noting that “nothing is guaranteed” for those embarking on such missions, but the team's hard work paid off in the end with the impressive results of their interdictions, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
In addition to the seizure of narcotics, Lt. Cecelia Hosley spoke with ABC 10 News and reported that at least 14 individuals were detained in connection with the smuggling efforts. These suspects have since been turned over to the DEA for processing, an important step towards disrupting and dismantling these criminal networks.
The fight against drug cartels, particularly in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, is an ongoing and collaborative effort that requires input and expertise from law enforcement agencies both within the United States and with international counterparts. The ultimate goal is to prevent these narcotics from reaching U.S. soil and to bring the individuals responsible for these crimes to justice. Due to the scale of the operation carried out by the Coast Guard Cutter Steadfast this summer serves as a significant victory in that fight, as highlighted by Fox 5 San Diego.
Following the successful interdiction and seizure of the narcotics, the focus of efforts now shifts towards criminal prosecutions by international partners and the U.S. Attorney's Office, as reported by Fox 5 San Diego. Once all related cases are prosecuted, the seized drugs will ultimately be destroyed.
