53-year-old Timothy Aaron Carlton, an inmate at San Diego Central Jail, was discovered unresponsive in his cell, prompting an investigation by the Sheriff's Homicide Unit to determine the cause of his untimely death according to an official press release issued by the San Diego County Sheriff's Department (SDCSD).
Carlton, who resided in El Cajon, was arrested by the El Cajon Police Department on May 2, 2023, for an outstanding felony warrant, providing false identification to police officers, false personation, and possession of a controlled substance, with a Post Release Community Supervision (PRCS) revocation reported by Fox 5 San Diego. Following his arrest, Carlton was then booked into San Diego Central Jail.
Upon discovering Carlton unresponsive in his jail cell, deputies and jail medical staff immediately initiated life-saving efforts, administering CPR, Naloxone, and an automated external defibrillator (AED) in an attempt to revive him as reported in the official press release, however, their attempts to save Carlton were unsuccessful. The San Diego Fire Department subsequently took over the resuscitation efforts but ultimately declared Carlton dead at around 7:30 p.m. on July 20.
In light of this tragic event, SDCSD extended their sympathies to Carlton's family and those affected by his untimely passing. The department also announced that a Sheriff's Family Liaison Officer will provide support to Carlton's family as they navigate through the loss of their loved one as per ABC 10 News.
As per standard protocol for all in-custody death incidents, the Sheriff's Homicide Unit is set to conduct a thorough and comprehensive investigation to determine the cause and manner of Carlton's death. In addition, the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office will play a crucial role in establishing the exact cause and manner of his passing.
Furthermore, the Citizen's Law Enforcement Review Board (CLERB) was promptly notified of Carlton's death, ensuring the necessary oversight and transparency for this incident.
