A man was killed in a shocking event that took place at the 70th Street La Mesa Trolley Station, prompting an ongoing search for the suspect. According to FOX 5 San Diego, La Mesa police received a 911 call around 8:40 p.m. on Thursday, July 13, reporting a man down at the trolley station, with the Metropolitan Transit System employee responding to the scene and attempting CPR on the victim, a 47-year-old man who had unfortunately suffered an apparent stab wound to his chest and who was later pronounced dead at Sharp Memorial Hospital.
Detectives have been diligently working to piece together the chilling series of events, as they learned through their initial investigation that the victim and another man had engaged in an altercation at the trolley station, eventually leading to the stabbing, and, as 10 News reports, investigators remain uncertain about the exact nature of the relationship between the suspect and the victim or what specific circumstances led to the incident; that said, investigators do not currently believe this was a random act of violence.
As a result, the authorities are now pleading with the public to help in locating the suspect, who is described as a man in his late 20s to early 30s with a dark complexion, wearing a light blue Chargers baseball cap, dark blue jeans, a white T-shirt with black print, and a blue, short-sleeve button-up shirt with a floral pattern, as mentioned in a report by Times of San Diego.
Adding to the puzzle, the suspect was reportedly carrying a skateboard and, at one point during the encounter, wore a red face mask covering his nose and mouth, raising myriad questions about what could have possibly transpired that night, with vehicle and pedestrian traffic near the trolley station having been closed for several hours as detectives continued their in-depth investigation into the stabbing; though the area has since been reopened, the suspect appears to have left the scene on foot, walking westbound on Alvarado Road post-altercation.
Caution is being urged by police for anyone who may spot the suspect, advising the public not to approach the man but rather to contact the La Mesa police at 619-667-1400 or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers at 888-570-8477; tips leading to an arrest may even result in a reward of up to $1,000.
