San Diego Murder Mystery: Second Suspect Snagged, Victim NamedSDPD

Recently, the Redwood Village community in San Diego was shaken by a homicide that occurred on July 22, 2023. After initially arresting one suspect, authorities have now apprehended a second individual connected to the case. As investigations continue, the victim's identity has been revealed according to an official press release from the San Diego Police Department.

Stephen Toney, a 29-year-old Black male, was brutally gunned down on 54th Street and Chollas Parkway in Redwood Village. San Diego Police officers were alerted to gunshots in the area and quickly found Toney suffering from a gunshot wound in a nearby ravine, but sadly, Toney succumbed to his injuries despite being promptly transported to a local hospital.

Investigators discovered that Toney had been involved in an argument with two Hispanic males before the fatal shooting. The suspects were seen fleeing the scene in a light-colored vehicle. The first suspect, 39-year-old Esteban Elizondo, was apprehended on July 23, 2023, as a passenger in a vehicle during a traffic stop. Elizondo was subsequently arrested for Toney's murder and for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Authorities then identified the second suspect as 29-year-old Peter Santiago, and on July 27, 2023, Santiago was also arrested at a residence on 50th Street. Santiago faces murder and conspiracy charges.

Though two suspects are now in custody, the motive behind this heinous crime remains unclear. Police spokespeople have not divulged further information on the nature of the argument between Toney and the suspects, nor have they disclosed any potential connections between the victim and the accused. The investigation is ongoing, and detectives are urging anyone with information to reach out to the Homicide Unit or Crime Stoppers.
