On Sunday, July 2, 2023, a fellow hiker made a tragic discovery on the Eagle Summit Trail in the Modoc National Forest Wilderness: the body of 44-year-old Ben Kiyoshi Namura-Weingrow, an experienced hiker from Oakland, California, according to KRCR TV. Located about 1,000 feet below the summit on the southeast side of the mountain, Namura-Weingrow had navigated the challenging trail once before, as CBS San Francisco reported, making his untimely death all the more perplexing.
Working together, teams from the Modoc County Sheriff's Office, U.S. Forest Service, and Cal Fire recovered Namura-Weingrow's body on Monday, July 3. However, despite their collaborative efforts, the cause and manner of his death remain undetermined. Further the Modoc County Sheriff's Office does not suspect foul play.
With friends and family left reeling from this tragic loss, the hiking community mourns one of its own.
