For the Hernandez family of Barrio Logan, the mysterious death of their daughter, Leah Hernandez, at a Tijuana hotel has left them scrambling for answers and demanding more information from law enforcement, as reported by Telemundo 20. Leah, a 22-year-old San Diego resident and member of the LGBTQ+ community, was found dead in a Tijuana hotel on July 15, 2023, after spending the night out with friends in the city's nightclub district.
The night before, Leah had told her parents she was going out with friends in San Diego, but the next day, her friends informed the concerned family that they had ventured to Tijuana instead, a trip they claimed was unusual for Leah. Upon the discovery that she had traveled to Mexico, Leah's parents hurried across the border seeking answers about their daughter's whereabouts. They were directed to the medical examiner's office, where they were forced to identify their daughter's battered body that was found at the San Ysidro Hotel, as Telemundo 20 detailed.
Despite the family's insistence that they noticed visible signs of a struggle on Leah's body, the Baja California State Prosecutor's Office (FGE) found no signs of violence, and their official cause of death was listed as asphyxia by broncho-aspiration of gastric contents, as reported by both NBC San Diego. However, the Hernandez family remains skeptical about the official explanation, questioning the various details of the case, such as who was with Leah that night, who rented the hotel room, and how Leah was discovered.
"It is impotence, one lets one's children go to enjoy their roots and they kill our children, and relatives, and there is no response from the police," Leah's father, Javier Hernandez, told in Spanish Telemundo 20.
The grieving family has since established a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses, but they are still desperate for answers about what truly happened to their daughter. As they spend their days surrounded by loved ones who gather, placing flowers, lit candles, photographs, and messages in memory of Leah, the Hernandez family hopes that anyone with information about her untimely death will come forward, allowing them to seek closure and find justice for their beloved daughter.
